Velocity Filter is a tool designed to seamlessly integrate MIDI velocity responsiveness into your synthesizer patches. By simply adding it as an audio unit effect on your synth track, you can achieve natural and musical responses.
Its main function is to convert non-velocity-sensitive synth sounds into velocity-sensitive ones. It offers two main modes: a MIDI-controlled filter and a MIDI-operated volume control. In filter mode, it dynamically adjusts high-frequency energy based on the velocity of each MIDI note, resulting in softer sounds for lower velocity notes. Users have control over the boost/cut levels and frequency range. Alternatively, in volume control mode, the plugin adjusts volume levels in sync with incoming MIDI velocity.
Besides MIDI velocity, users have the flexibility to control the filter using MIDI-CC or aftertouch controls, providing multiple approaches to customization.
Contrary to traditional methods of modulating synth patches with cutoff frequency or gain modulation, Velocity Filter implements a unique approach by modulating the gain of a high-shelf filter. This results in a distinct sound quality that can complement existing filters without compromising the original tone of the patch. Moreover, applying this filter proves to be more efficient when dealing with large patch libraries, as it can be universally applied to outputs without altering individual patches.
While offering a unique approach, Velocity Filter comes with certain limitations. It operates on a single filter for all notes, meaning in scenarios where multiple notes are played simultaneously at varying velocities, the filter settings will prioritize the loudest note. Additionally, there is a slight 1-millisecond delay in transitioning from loud to soft, potentially impacting patches with minimal attack times.
It's worth noting that Velocity Filter functions exclusively as an audio unit plugin and is compatible with host apps like AUM, Audiobus, Cubasis, Auria, and Beatmaker 3. Notably, it does not support GarageBand due to limitations in MIDI message support for audio effects.
